Serving as the Chairman of Wipro Technologies, Azim Premji’s association with the erstwhile Western Indian Vegetable Products Ltd goes back to 1960s when the main focus of business was its oil crushing plant that generated revenue of 2 million USD. At that time, the company carried its business under the brands Kisan, Sunflower, and Camel. Wipro’s Chairman Azim Premji was born on July 24, 1945 into a Gujarat-based Muslim family in Mumbai. He has one brother and two sisters. His father Muhammed Hashem Premji was a celebrated businessman of his time and was accorded the title of Rice King of Burma. It is said that when India and Pakistan were created, Muhammad Ali Jinnah (the founder of Pakistan) invited Premji’s father to live in Pakistan. But Muhammed Hashem Premji chose to stay in India.
