Vishal Sikka, CEO (August 2014 –August 2017)

Vishal Sikka, the former CEO and MD of Infosys, joined the Indian IT outsourcing giant in 2014. He resigned from the post in August 2017. Vishal was the first outsider appointed to lead the second largest Indian IT services firm (after Tata Consultancy) that reportedly had a workforce of 160,000 employees and operated in 30 countries. During his three year tenure, Sikka endeavored to inculcate and nurture the concept of design thinking (a method that helps in solving complex problems) in the firm that abided by an otherwise traditional culture. Under Sikka, Infosys recorded 9.1% growth in revenue in 2015-16 and 7.4% growth in 2016-17.  He focused on automation and created new businesses in the areas of artificial intelligence, big data, and analytics. However, his decision-making ability and style of functioning did not go down well with many old Infosys hands. Vishal Sikka received continuous criticism from Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy. According to the founder, some within the company felt that Sikka was more suitable to be the CTO and not the CEO.

Some were unhappy with the fact that the Infosys CEO managed operations from Palo Alto in the US (and not from India) and used chartered planes for client meetings, which incurred extra cost. Some others expressed their displeasure about the disproportionate pay hike Vishal received in comparison to an average Infosys employee. Because of difference in opinion and constant backlash from founding members of the company, he decided to quit and move on. For a peaceful transition of position, Sikka was made the executive vice chairman of the company till March 2018.

After he quit Infosys, Vishal Sikka was succeeded by Salil Parekh, who is the current Infosys CEO.
