Walmart is reportedly looking to acquire a significant stake in Tata Group’s proposed ‘super app’, slated to launch in December 2020 or early 2021. The ‘super app’ will bring all of Tata’s consumer businesses such as food and grocery, fashion, lifestyle, insurance, financial services, bill payments, electronics, education, healthcare, etc. under one unified platform.
Walmart could invest about $20-25 billion to acquire a significant stake in Tata’s ‘super app’ business. If confirmed, this deal will surpass the previous highest transaction in the Indian retail space, namely Walmart acquiring majority stake in Flipkart for $16 billion in 2018.
